John Fullbright, the darkhorse Americana Grammy nominee of 2012, performed Thursday, June 13, at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro. The 25-year-old Oklahoman, an incredibly versatile songwriter and instrumentalist, ran through most of his Grammy-nominated album From the Ground Up, mixing in covers of songs by Dan Bern ("After the Parade") and Jimmy Webb ("If You See Me Getting Smaller") as well as a few blues standards.…

Early forecast called for inclement weather, but the only thunder heard in Durham on Monday was the crack of the Bulls’ bats as they upended Louisville in the first of a four-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Outfielder Wil Myers was pulled from Sunday’s contest after doubling and scoring a run in the first inning.…

After rallying from a four-run deficit, the Durham Bulls were not able to surpass the Indianapolis Indians, falling 6-4 Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

In front of an almost sold out crowd of 9.565, fans were into the game early and often.…

Saturday night at the Casbah brought about the continuation of the venue's series of songwriters circle shows, with performances by Jason Kutchma, Chip Robinson, Kevin Abernathy and Mic Harrison. Below are three clips from songs played by Robinson, including two oft-overlooked ballads ("Psychic Friend" and "Two Candles") from the Backsliders' 1999 album, Southern Lines.…

British filmmaker Mike Leigh is known for his very particular way of making films. Rather than start with a script, Leigh works with his actors in a designated improvisation period before filming begins.…

Although Bill Peterson has visited his native North Carolina a few times since becoming commissioner of the North American Soccer League last November, this past Wednesday was his first time watching the Carolina RailHawks in action this season. Unlike his besuited predecessor, Peterson strikes a more casual pose, roaming WakeMed Soccer Park clad in a casual button-front shirt and blue jeans.…

I first became aware of Brett Harris two summers ago, when I went to see Chapel Hill pop mastermind Chris Stamey play a Tuesday-evening acoustic show at West End Wine Bar on Franklin Street and Harris appeared as an unbilled opener. Between sets, Stamey spoke so highly of Harris' work that it seemed mandatory to check out his 2010 solo debut, Man of Few Words.…

WAKEMED SOCCER PARK/CARY—Two weeks ago, history repeated itself when, for the second straight year, the Carolina RailHawks ousted the LA Galaxy in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and advanced to host C.D. Chivas USA.

For about 90-plus minutes Wednesday night in Cary, it looked as though history might repeat itself again.…

One of the closest experiences any of us will have to rival time travel is taking place these nights just after dark in Horton Grove, a verdant section in Stagville, a state historic site several miles out Old Oxford Highway. Prior to the Civil War, Stagville held the dubious distinction of being the largest plantation in North Carolina, and one of the largest in the United States: a spread some 47 square miles in length which stretched to the north and east of Durham.…

Cat Martino took five years to follow up her first full-length. This half-decade hiatus after 2004's Here Now had nothing to do with artistic burnout or a move from her Brooklyn home to a new town.…

When do we ever see this movie, this film that tells the truth about the not-so-happily-ever-after?
            by David Fellerath
I approached Richard Linklater's Before Midnight with the kind of trepidation with which you might approach a Belle and Sebastian record you haven't listened to in a couple of decades. I was 25 when I met Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) in Before Sunrise.…

There's nothing arbitrary in how "Ho Hey" is pieced together from things people were proven to already like. Much of pop music is about the timely and rejuvenating calibration of bits gathered from other recent songs.
            by Brian Howe
"It's really arbitrary to any of us," said Wesley Schultz, lead singer of the folk-rock band The Lumineers, who perform at Cary's Koka Booth Amphitheatre on Thursday. He was talking to American Songwriter about the breakout success of his band's independently released, self-titled debut album, which, seemingly from out of nowhere, went double-platinum and reached No. 2 on the U.S. charts in 2012.…

I don't get back to New York all that often because of logistics, parental duties and other forms of reality. But this year, two of the NYC Popfest headliners made it a must-do proposition.

My first dose of jangle was The Beatles' version of Buddy Holly's "Words of Love," featuring the gloriously ringing, almost bagpipey licks of George Harrison's Gretsch Tennessean. It was on a record called Beatles VI, or "Beatles Vee Eye," as we pronounced it, and I've loved that trebly stuff ever since.…

The largest contributor to landfills is food. Recovering just 15 percent of it would cut in half the number of Americans who go hungry each year.

GMCs have been temporarily banned on national wildlife refuges in the Southeast. But at six meetings across the region, including one in Columbia, N.C., FWS is revisiting the issue.

"Class warfare as a part of racial oppression explains why most people who have the resources to demonstrate and be arrested happen to be white."

In "White like me: Moral Monday is a class struggle, not a racial one" [June 5], Dick Reavis offered a compelling story of interracial organizing throughout an ongoing civil rights struggle whose strength has grown, luckily, in recent months. The article's main argument, however, elided the intimate connection in the Southern United States between racial oppression and class oppression.…

I found myself nodding as Bill Cobey, Gov. Pat McCrory's choice to head the State Board of Education, talked the other day about a transformative time in education and the need to cultivate children's innate curiosity.
            by Bob Geary
I find myself in an awkward position defending our public schools against the depredations of right-wing Republicans. I distinctly remember, as a restless public high school student years ago, outlining my new and improved method of teaching American history without boring everybody to death—a method that called for casting aside the textbook, with its maddening muddle of facts, and plunging instead into an in-depth study of critical events and issues.…
