The Independent's Citizen Awards were first given in 1984 to honor grassroots activists making the Triangle a better place to live, work and learn. That the list of nominees is so long each year is testament to the energy and commitment that makes this community great. Our thanks go out to all of the readers who sent nominations (and take heart if your nominee isn't featured here—we've thought of some tremendous story ideas out of this process).
Please join us in raising a toast to the accomplishments of our Citizens from across the Triangle and to the hard work of all of our community's activists, past, present and future.
