Herald-Sun lays off newsroom staffers

30 JUL 2008  •  by Fiona Morgan

Newsroom staffers were laid off at The Herald-Sun Tuesday.

Management at the newspaper was not available to confirm the layoffs as of Thursday morning. Neither Editor Bob Ashley nor publisher Rick Bean returned calls seeking comment.

In a column published Wednesday (registration required), Ashley confirmed that the paper had "lost a few positions," including some in the newsroom, as part of an effort "to cut costs fairly sharply" in response to declining ad revenues.

"Such moves are always painful," Ashley wrote, "but we had to recognize the financial realities in front of us." He said "fewer than 10" jobs were cut company-wide.

Photographer Kevin Seifert was laid off, leaving only three staff photographers to shoot for both The Herald-Sun and its Orange County edition, The Chapel Hill Herald.

Database librarian Mary Clements and obituary clerk Amanda Jordan-Farmer were also let go, according to sources close to the paper.

Copy editor Joel Haswell, who has worked for The Herald-Sun for 40 years, was offered early retirement. For now, he remains employed at the paper. Another veteran copy editor, Carl Boswell, said he will retire as of Sept. 1 but would not comment or say whether management offered him a retirement package. Haswell was responsible for updating much of the newspaper's Web site. Sources say Keith Upchurch, also a longtime copy editor, was also offered early retirement.

Durham's hometown daily newspaper has suffered steep declines in staff and circulation ever since the Paducah, Ky.-based Paxton Media bought the newspaper in 2005 (see "Inside The Herald-Sun," Jan. 18, 2006). On the day Paxton took over, management shocked staff and the community at large by firing 80 of the paper's 350 employees, including many newsroom veterans.

The paper's circulation has declined by about 38 percent since the purchase and now stands at 32,845 daily and 32,711 on Sundays, according to Audit Bureau of Circulation reports from March of this year.

Tuesday's layoffs were not a great surprise, given the rash of newsroom firings in recent months, including at The Herald-Sun's competitor, the Raleigh News & Observer (see "The N&O cuts 70 jobs," June 18, 2008). Both papers have also seen mounting staff losses by attrition, as demoralized employees jump ship.

"Half the desks are empty now, and there are dead computers and phones all over the place," said one recently departed Herald-Sun staffer. "Every day there is like going to a funeral, and I just couldn't take it anymore."

In his column, Ashley wrote that the paper "took great care to preserve our ability to put reporters on the street to report and write local news." He said some staffers were "redeployed" to fill vacant reporting positions, "boosting us to our greatest reporting strength in many months."

Correction: (July 31, 2008): An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that copy editors Joel Haswell, Carl Boswell and Keith Upchurch were fired.

This story has been updated since it first appeared.

In sports, Chad Saleska, who covered high schools and did some desk work, also got laid off.

I am shocked but not surprised. I send my heartfelt condolences to those who were laid off. I worked with almost all the folks you listed during my Herald-Sun days. I was there the day Paxton took over and laid off a large portion of the newsroom. That place was never the same after that. I still have good friends who work there, and I wish them the best. It's not easy to keep doing your job when morale is so low.

The three copy desk people you refer to as laid off were actually offered early retirement, from what I understand.

It should be noted that The Herald-Sun's most recent former publisher, a guy named Moser, said in the paper's February 22 edition that circulation was in the 38,000 area. The authoritative Audit Bureau of Circulation reported just a few weeks later that the true figure was only about 32,860. The former publisher's erroneous number was never publicly corrected by the The Herald-Sun. Is this the kind of miscommunication that is to be expected from a so-called communications company?

How can you be "shocked and surprised?" Obviously one is saddened that people lose jobs, but print media is struggling across the entire nation as advertising and classified revenues fall. Why, you ask--well, you are reading this story on the web, right?

This story says that Carl Boswell, Keith Upchurch and Joel Haswell were fired. It's my understanding that this is not correct.

Thank you for writing. I'm trying to confirm the correct information and will post it as soon as possible.

Fiona, you're my hero. There were some folks laid off from the "downstairs" crew as well. One of the graphic designers (11 years of service) and one of the advertising sales staff. My source tells me that most of these folks had histories of medical problems, 2 cancer survivors I heard, and was wondering if that aspect could be investigated. The previous publisher seemed to have no personality whatsoever, but the new guy seems to be genuine and personable. Let's see what happens. Keep us posted!

While the INDY has dropped 9000 or so readers since the swap-up in editorial, staggering under the debt load from acquiring the Spectator and their fancy scmancy new headquarters. The self-absorbed ones can't even give away a free newspaper!

Al, Please attribute your source on the Indy's alleged loss of 9,000 readers since "the swap-up" in editorial, as I'm not aware of any circulation decline approaching that number.

Also, the paper's had several editors over the years; which swap-up are you referring to?

Instead of asking Al to produce his sources why not just say what the numbers are? I mean you're the editor. It shouldn't be that tough for you to come up with numbers.

After all, if you're going to take the time to respond to his post go ahead and kick him in the teeth with some facts.

Unless your numbers show that you lost only 6,563 readers in the last 2 years. In that case maybe providing the real numbers wouldn't be quite as convincing. ;-)

"See how wrong Al is! We only suck like 3/4 as bad as he claims, so there!!"

Oh and to clarify I did not mean to imply by last post that ya'll suck. I love the Indy.

Also, another thought, maybe "swap-up in editorial" was referring to the Indy's change in its editorial positions from being those of a bunch of right-wing conservative Rush Limbaugh wannabes over to the tree-huggin free lovin left wing hippies we know and love today.

That just what came to my mind when I read "swap up in editorial".

Since Hart got his head cut off and thrown off the train. Since you won't come right out and say it, here's the citation from Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. The INDY used to consistently move 50,000 plus. Circulation: 42,653 (as of March 2008) http://aan.org/alternative/Aan/ViewCompany?oid=oid%3A41

It's no secret circ is down, Al. Anyone can see the stats; that's why we make them publicly available. But it is completely inaccurate to state that we've lost 9,000 readers in the past year, the time period you're referring to-during the "editor swap-up."

Oddly, it seems we consistently hear from you, Al, around the same time I have conversations with Peter Eichenberger. Coincidence or psychic phenomena?

No coincidence,Zork, that's is for paranoids. I know the man. We have words every now and then over the occasional Guinness. He is getting along fine in his new situations, where he hung his hat after y'all s***t-canned him along with his substantial following, many of whom have followed him to The Downtowner and New Raleigh. He seems of two minds, somewhere between shadenfreud and genuine sadness, watching the pathetic decline of a formerly fine newsweekly. Best of luck

Lisa Sorry, I reported incorrect figures from AAN. The figures below are from your site, the top the actual distribution, the lower, the number printed. Note I highballed the actual number. The INDY has actually dropped below forty thousand, whereas you cheerily publish "50,000" on your masthead. Tsk, tsk, tsk, a newspaper with a fact problem. I suggest you reuse the ones you can't give away for enviro-mulch Good luck Al Apr '08 - Jun '08 39474 + 0 = 39474 44392
