*SHOCKED* and dismayed that Whole Foods was voted BEST OUTDOOR DINING in both Durham and Orange Counties. In Chapel Hill, their al fresco options amount to about half a dozen rickety aluminum chairs looking out on a parking lot! Seems pretty obvious to me that Weaver Street should be the winner -- here's a theory: I bet people got mixed up and thought that Weaver Street Market was just another Whole Foods? Also, Tough Love Boutique (awesome though it is) does *not* sell vintage jewelry. Just how the hell did they get voted second runner-up in this category, then?

Tough Love Boutique does have some vintage jewelry.. rings, earrings, and jewelry boxes. I was excited about what they had but hope they get more vintage items.

Only lived in the Triangle for a year and a half, but even I know that this list is...sketchy. A couple of good recs, but it appears weak to me. Very weak.

I agree that Whole Foods outside eating is pretty poor. How about Parker and Otis, or Pop's, or even Toast. And HOW did Piedmont not make the list for ANYTHING????? Some folks may not go out much.

This is clearly a list of which company submitted the most entries. This list is only useful when the Indy staff shares their picks.

Where is Camp Bow Wow on best place to board your pet?? Sunny Acres as a finalist??? They shouldn't have even made the list! I wouldn't even stay there!!!!

I'll say it now just like I say it every year: National chains should be omitted from the tallies, period. They always have an advantage due to name recognition. If this magazine is called "The Independent" then by all means, we should be voting for the best independent (ie, local) businesses.

So Dissapointed!!! i was stunned at how bland this year's list was! it doesn't seem like any new places were nominated, and it was so discouraging to see all the big/national name places on it. also, why do orange and chatham always get linked together? of course nothing from Chatham got nominated, and it is a shame, as there are some really amazing new places, and some fabulous old ones worth visiting!!!

The Readers' Choices are exactly that—selections by readers. I hope those commenting or otherwise dissatisfied with the results either voted for their favorites or are planning to do so next year.

ceceliam's comment about Whole Foods winning best outdoor dining is right on; it is indeed shocking. The theory, however, that Independent readers confused Whole Foods in Durham (or Chapel Hill) with Weaver Street Market in Carrboro bestows upon said readers a measure of undeserved stupidity. A more likely explanation for Whole Foods' shocking win is a severe case of old-fashioned ballot-box stuffing. If this the case, SHAME ON YOU! Whole Foods.

I'd like to thank those who took the time to vote this year and to those who feel impassioned enough to comment here. You clearly feel strongly about the choices because you care so much about the community the Best of the Triangle Readers Choice Awards represent.

However, the fact remains that the process is electronic, allowing each person to vote only once. Entries from different individuals who had multiple identical answers were flagged by the program and reviewed by staff members for their validity. There was no ballot stuffing.

If a national chain was a winner in a category, the decision was made to make sure to highlight an extra finalist position for a local business as well.

The significant point may not be how certain businesses won but why some won over others. I encourage everyone to continue to vote and tell all your friends and neighbors to participate again next year.

The sushi bar on Glenwood revealed that the fish who lost their soul on the menu received no honor after last nights attempt at fine dining. My tongue has nothing but contempt, horror and total disagreement with the best pick for sushi. You poor neophytes.

So Hell won for Best Jukebox and Best Staff. Too bad the majority of the staff (and consequently the jukebox) are now gone! What the Hell?

I am so excited that Café Capistrano is the best new restaurant! This is very well deserved. If you have not been there, make the trip to Durant Road to try it! The owner is delightful and the food is incredible. You will love it!

Re: survey design, that would be a question for the advertising department, as editorial has nothing to do with the ballot, the process or the readers' choices.

Come on people, sushi blues is the hard rock cafe of sushi. It is quite obvious readers are more taken with big obnoxious displays of dead rockers than good sushi.

And, how come Ed Mckay Used Books gets shafted in every single issue of best of's picks for book stores? They are by FAR the best book store in Wake County, with the biggest & best selection and non-rude most knowledgeable employees, not to mention they do a hell of a lot for the community. Wake up, Quail Ridge and Nice Price? Yeah two really great bookstores, for me to poop on.
