Chapel Hill Comics? Really? That place sells like five comics and the rest of the joint is graphic novels, manga and collections. It's nice and all ... but not a comic book shop.

WORST. COMIC BOOK STORE. EVER.

BEST PLACE TO HEAR HIP-HOP... Cat's Cradle???? Finalist... The Pour House??? Do you mean the best place to hear Hip-Hop if you're not comfortable being around African-Americans? You can't be serious.

As an independent newspaper, I can't believe The Guitar Center was even an option in the "best place to buy music gear" category.....you know they're the reason that the Music Loft in Durham went OUT OF BUSINESS, right? Next year why don't you just add Wal-Mart to the list too.

To all our readers, please note that the Best of the Triangle winners are open ended questions and any business or name can be submitted. The winners of each category are the businesses or names that have been submitted the most through our online Best of the Triangle survey.

I understand the open-ended aspect (didn't the Indy actually used to write an editor's pick section?), but I'm mystified how Bob Dumbass won best DJ. Radio is in such a sad state these days.

And Talk of the Town not even getting a mention in the jazz section really does make this more of a "Best of the White Triangle." (Not that I don't fall into this category too, but...)

by MichaelB Durham 11 Jun 2009, 11:47am Report this comment
Maybe I'm missing something, but if the Independent's "Best of the Triangle" is now strictly a readers poll - where the paper simply picks the categories (i.e. Best Pizza), and the readers write-in their preferences (i.e. any pizza joint in the triangle), then how can you possibly seem personally affronted by who won? Sure, Guitar Center might be more corporate than your favorite locally owned instrument purveryor. Yeah, the Cat's Cradle might not be your favorite place to see hip-hop. But, for one reason or another, lots of people who aren't you, liked the winning businesses enough to fill-out a ballot in their favor. Sorry. Sucks to be a victim of a democratic system which, unfortunately, didn't work out exactly how you thought it should. Of course, citing race and the long, dark shadow of corporate America (among loads of other inane rationales) for why your favorite hot dog isn't everyone else's favorite hot dog is obviously easier than wrapping your head around the fact that you thinking something is right (or hip or "best") will never make it universally, or even predominately, so. The paper counted the ballots and, clearly, you, your friends, and other right-minded folks who agree with you didn't vote enough. Sounds like they didn't shop enough at the Music Loft either - whether it was or wasn't a terrific store. Time to go find another "cause" to irrationally and illogically rally against.

All categories should be divided by county. I live in Orange and NEVER get to Raleigh.

I agree with Lumpy. The Indy's "Best Of" is open-ended and, yes, democratic. Any complaints about the results are unfounded. We can't expect them to do anything other than count the votes and report the results.
by edblank Chapel Hill 12 Jun 2009, 10:44am Report this comment
For one to accept the results of the "Best of" as representing a democratic consensus, one has to factor in a shrinking of the electing body i.e. the INDY's sagging readership, this based on circulation figures, down some 15 thousand or so, a result probably of the current tepid, diluted editorial outlook. Fewer and fewer people I talk to even bother to pick it up anymore as the rag has become so dull.

Where is the listing for the first quarter of 2009 anyway? Don't, please, tell me to look under "find a paper," 'cause it isn't there. I miss the INDY.

Actually, since the "Best Of" is a popularity contest based solely on readers' votes, one doesn't have to factor in anything - including readership statistics, how often someone visits Raleigh or not, the price of tea in China, etc. - because the place receiving the most votes wins. Period. If X gets one more vote than Y, they get a plaque and their name in bold print. I'm not sure whether that's a "democratic consensus" or not, but I guess I'm not sure what a "democratic consensus" is. Is it considered a "democratic consensus" when a presidential candidate wins a largely populated state by a few thousand votes, yet carries all of its electorals? I'd call that a "democratic disagreement." As for your theory on diminished circulation, wouldn't this translate to your vote being more important than before? I mean, if 3 people read the INDY, and two vote for the same "best" place, that other dude is really going to be pissed. Of course, 3 people don't read the INDY. In fact, while the "people" you talk to pick up the paper less frequently, the "people" I talk to confirmed that more votes were cast for this "Best Of" than any in history. I'm sure it's not an overwhelming number compared to the paper's total readership, but again, isn't that another reason to get online and vote for who you want. Who knows, you might even help your favorite businesses win some categories they didn't. Then you could stroll around smiling and feel "right," instead of so aggrevied.
by lumpy Raleigh 12 Jun 2009, 12:35pm Report this comment
All I was saying is that if it's an "independent" magazine, then they should restrict the results to independent businesses. But as it stands, it is currently a reader’s poll so sure, I get the point. I personally hope that next year they would consider only independent businesses as the winners....just my personal opinion though, no replies in essay format necessary.

Binks, the 2009 circ numbers for the print edition have been posted under Find a Paper. The web stats will be posted soon. I don't know where your 15,000 figure came from, though.

Thank you for finally responding to my repeated queries about your until-now "secret" figures, although I await a confirmed audit since as I am skeptical about your "self-reported" numbers. In the old days, the INDY typically moved some 50,000 copies. The figure is now usually 38,000 or so, my 15,000 was a result of my bad math. I should have said 12 or 13,000. I apologize.

There is something other than a soft market to blame, i.e. mediocre entertainment listings, etc. I know a distribution slave who talks about carrying armloads of them back.

I was recently in Asheville (pop 225,000) The Mountain Express gets rid of a mere 10,000 fewer than y'all do now* in a market where that city is the only major population center, the INDY, by comparison, serves a tripartite population center of 1,549,822. The INDY, sadly has become inconsequential. I am looking for other advertising options.

RE: Chapel Hill Comics comments. Oh no! How terrible to have a clean comic book store that isn't dimly lit, is run by friendly sociable people, is clean and organized. Sure, not the best place to get your backissues of Gen 13 or Youngblood, but they carry a hell of a lot more than 5 comics.
