Re: “Taser death raises questions about mental health and police training

Better this fella was allowed to run off than killed by the police. Fuck mental health training, if someone is noncompliant after 3 shocks from a 10,000 volt battery, you need to wait for more backup and do it the old fashioned way, not kill someone with the weapon that's supposed to save you both.....no police officer should be allowed to use a taser unless normal force doesn't work. They're police for a reason, and they should be protecting EVERYONE including the perps, from themselves, if necessary. The way I hear it, they like to pull up next to drug dealers these days and just hit them, right from the car, hog tie and release after questioning. It's getting a little out of hand to say the least.

Re: “The climate change movement is not resonating with the public

I admit the Boston bombing is a tragedy, BUT, so is the climate change. WHERE will people run when there is no where left to run, when there is No Clean Water, No Clean Air, No Contaminated Food? Time is running out for all of us and The Gas & Oil Companies are only making it worse due to their greed for $$$$$ and Power. I believe and will always believe the HUMAN RACE is the most important Race. PLEASE Go and learn get educated on what these companies are doing to our EARTH, Our Home, To Us.

Re: “LiLa's IV

Thank you for taking the time to review LiLa's new album. I don't think you quite grasp who these guys are, especially when you refer to them as a "six-man bro band". These guys are great at what they do and put all their heart and soul into the music. If you want a better rendition, please come out to the release party at the Cradle on Friday so you can hear these songs with the energy and passion that LiLa brings to the stage.

.Peace.

Re: “LiLa's IV

Thanks for review-- LiLa has without a doubt some of the hyp-est concerts in Durham, and I don't think IV is going to change any of that. Partially agree with some of production critique but that has never been the reason to listen to LiLa-- I don't think they will stop giving Durham (or Chapel Hill, Friday) or anywhere else a packed and pulsing show, and that's what it has always been about for me and plenty of other folks. IV doesn't lack any of the thoughtful lyrics or jamming beats that we love from LiLa and I find it hard to believe Durham's going to outgrow those guys anytime soon

Re: “DVD+Digital: Cold feet, Lizzy Caplan and Save the Date

Yes, I think she's the real deal. She has those big expressive eyes that seem to be critical for film actors and movie stardom. I wonder if you could map the DNA for big movie star eyes.

Where can we find photos of the match?

Re: “A brief history of pimento cheese

Absolutely, bag of shredded sharp cheddar, couple of dollops of good mayonnaise like Duke's or Hellmann's. Some people put some sour cream or a little cream cheese. One jar of pimentos, Dromedary are best, because they are from Johnson City, TN. Pinch of garlic powder, couple shots of Worchestershire sauce, salt and black pepper to taste. That's it. Let sit in the refrigerator overnight or at least several hours.

Feel sorry for Fort Lauderdale Strikers, though it’s still a great match hope they can make up on their next figth with RailHawks. I just notice while watching their replay that there are repetitive errors that can be avoided if they only learn the 7 Secrets To Soccer Excellence (http://e1fit.com/recommendsSoccerWebinar/). If you want to be competitive you need to learn the 7 key mental, physical and nutritional strategies that you can use immediately and over time to catapult your performance.

Re: “DVD+Digital: Cold feet, Lizzy Caplan and Save the Date

"Caplan provides a depth of feeling that isn't always there," is what I've always noticed about her. I'm looking forward to seeing her playing lead or at least a strong supporting role in a big-budget drama. She's certainly a "future" star, but if only the future could come quicker. This seems like a throwaway role though.

Re: “The GOP's free-market reforms are aimed at public education

Hold on. DPS has about 24,000 enrolled annually. About 350 drop out each year. And about 350 enter K every year "at risk," Durham has a solvable problem. Adding an extra grade, universal Pre K, has a good chance to eliminate the poverty gap, assuming the school system continues to pay attention to the at risk kids and their families thru to graduation, don't you think?

Re: “Triangle loses major spay/neuter service POP-NC

This should be a state run program funded by a tax on commercial breeders and purchases. It would solve the overpopulation problem.
1. Buying a dog or cat would cost more, so shelter adoptions would go up. Breeding would go down.
2. Free/low cost spay and neuter would cut the population, especially in rural areas.

Re: “The GOP's free-market reforms are aimed at public education

Bill, could you please name some of the schools in NC that have 50% drop out rates? And the methodology you used to determine that was the rate? thanks

Re: “You can see great movies at NCMA; why can't the facilities match the programming?

While the past cannot be changed, its hard to believe this issue has not yet been addressed. It is unfortunate that film is still being handled as a second class art form at NCMA, particularly since these film series have become more and more popular over the years. Not only is a cultural service being handicapped to current and future patrons, but an opportunity for increased revenue to the museum is being missed. With proper facilities, NCMA could become the premiere venue for classic film in North Carolina. Lets hope improvement and expansion plans will be in the works soon.

Wait a minute, aren't smaller government and federalism at opposite ends of the ideological spectrum?

God, we can't even get competent fascist corporate overlords these days...

Re: “The GOP's free-market reforms are aimed at public education

Bill are you a product of NC's schools? Your subject verb agreement leads me to believe otherwise.... our latest graduation rates are way, way up -above 80% to be factual. Countries that support teachers with higher pay and unions do extremely well... google it... and study after study has shown that as a whole charters perform worse or on par with public schools.... not better... ever. I do agree we need different options for our students but nothing good can come from anything proposed by the fascist, semi-racist ALEC or their corporate agenda.

Re: “The GOP's free-market reforms are aimed at public education

This is another reason why Duke Energy leaves itself wide open to criticism for supporting ALEC. Already, Duke ignored 150,000 people nationwide asking it to dump ALEC for suppressing voters and attacking climate and clean energy policies it claims to support. The RPS battle in the North Carolina legislature, led by former Duke engineer and ALEC member Rep. Mike Hager, is another new example.]

Thanks for writing!

Re: “The GOP's free-market reforms are aimed at public education

After decades of Liberal Education policies, many Schools in NC have a 50% dropout rate, and it is estimated that 20% of the population is functionally illiterate ( i.e. can't fill out an employment application). The situation is getting worse to the point that America ( and NC ) is losing our competitive position, but, for the Professional Educators, it's all about getting more, and more, and more money.
Just how bad does it have to get before we do something ?
Medium wage America has 14% manufacturing employment and falling .. High wage Germany has 34% manufacturing employment and rising.. What's going on? Well , Germany has 2/3 education in trades, while in America, every student is supposed to go to college.
Not working out very well, is it?
