This article fails to mention the millions of dollars saved by Tedesco and the former Republican majority on the school board. They found ways to streamline central office operations and focus more dollars on the classroom. As the lone voice on the Buncombe County (NC) school board speaking up for students, I have gone to John Tedesco for advice numerous times and he has always taken the time to give me intelligent counsel and public documents from the Wake Board to use as examples with my rubber-stamping Board. Please support John Tedesco in the state superintendent race!

If I thought I could believe the guy I'd say he makes some good points. And the fact that he's anathema to the GOP "mainstream" (whatever that is) is attractive in and of itself.
But the voices are telling me "Beware of Republicans bearing gifts."

My comment pertains to the related sidebar with this story: Though I certainly understand why The Indy endorsed Mike Causey versus Richard Morgan for the GOP insurance commissioner nomination (based on Morgan's history as in the legislature), I hope The Indy doesn't stray from its 2008 endorsement of Democrat Wayne Goodwin when it comes time for endorsements in the fall 2012 contest. (Goodwin has saved us over a billion dollars, and is a stalwart defender of his consumer protection role as Insurance Commissioner.) Here are some facts and not ad hominem attacks about Mike Causey: (a) According to the Secretary of State's office, Mike Causey has been a long-time paid lobbyist for insurance issues before the General Assembly and (b) by his own admission on his campaign website, Mike Causey worked as an insurance company executive for 30 years. (c) He's not just the Guilford County businessman he presents to some by citing his ownership of a farmers market. Mike Causey is (d) running a fourth time in 20 years to be state insurance commissioner. We can't afford to have an insurance commissioner who is tied to the insurance industry. Be very, very careful. Keep the fox from guarding the henhouse!

It was a sad day indeed--and I regret that those of us against Amendment One were not able to get people to understand what they were really voting into law. I kept wondering why the messages against it were so vague when so much was at stake. I think the civil unions issue should have been pushed harder--sure, the motive behind this hateful legislation was primarily ant-gay, but the goal was to defeat it, right?
And it was all about religion. Christianity, to be specific. The anti-amendment volunteers worked SO hard to defeat this, and a lot of money was donated for the cause--but ignorant, bigoted Christian fundamentalism won again in NC. It's time for Christian liberals to stop saying "Well, we're not like that" or "they misinterpret the bible"--and start fighting back against hate in the name of Jesus.

What doesn't she understand about the balance of powers? The Legislature makes the laws. A judge has NO right to use their opinions to modify the law based on who is before her.

Instead of criticizing the Independent and telling people to go look at his website, Mr. Dunn should have been able to clearly explain his position for every question asked. Making people jump through hoops to know your political stance is not going to make them vote for you.

I'm really surprised that you guys didn't really say much of anything about John Owens. He's young but he's the only one with a completely new perspective, and he knows both the budget and the issues better than any of the other candidates, including long-time incumbents. He's displayed this at numerous opportunities. Shame on you Indy!

I am Stephen Hopkins, a candidate for Durham County Commissioner. It surprised me that with all my expertise and experince that I wasn't even mention in this review. But I guess when you like the way things are and don't want positive change, you try to keep more of the same there. That is just what we will get if these endorsements are voted in. Mrs. Reckhow has been a Commissioner for 23 years. Keeping her there is no change, just make sure that we have more of the same or worse with the addiction of Jacobs and Wilson, with Fred Foster Jr for flavor.

To say that Darren Jackson has "earned" re-election is comical. Earning would suggest that he worked at it. Missing more than 100 votes? How is that working? Don Mial, if given the chance would do more for the district than Jackson.

You describe Ryan as "number-crunching" but fail to leave out the part where he "hasn't run the numbers yet" and has made no attempt at actually identifying the billions of dollars of budget cuts that he magically proposes in his budget proposals.
