What is the point of a local municipality when the state legislature can do what it wants. The state legislature has gone nuts with power if they push this and both republicans and democrats will not be happy about having local sovereign rights taken away.... so much for less government
I started a petition back in December concerning this issue before the stinky stuff hit the fan. Please visit and show support by signing. This is an opportunity to be heard without leaving your house or risking arrest. Here is the site http://signon.org/sign/systematic-destruct…
Wright School...
- is a state-operated facility that provides services free of charge to children placed from anywhere within NC
- is the only facility of its kind in NC for this age group
- provides both mental health and educational services to students in a unique and effective combination; this would not be offered by the new institution in Morganton
- has been funded for 50 years - 50 years - and I for one refuse to believe that things are so much worse now than any time in the last five decades that we cannot afford to keep it open
- has a national reputation as one of the most effective programs in the country, and its faculty and staff are widely considered to be among the very best in their profession

Until I see something more, I am going to assume that all the Repubs in the legislature are using the shock and aww tactic. The shock part is that they all push and pass the craziest laws they can so long as they line their pockets in the process with zero regard to the impact on the state, then McRory talks about compromise for a few minutes and everyone who isn't paying attention to what's really happening says "aww" because he appears normal by comparison.
McCrory is a puppet for Art Pope in the same sense that Bush Jr. was a puppet for Cheney. Even if we ousted all these tea-bagging fools on the next election cycle, the damage to the economy, public services, and our environment will not be so easily cleaned up. Thus begins the cycle of Republican opportunism. Make a mess, complain about the budget when Democrats try to clean your mess. Damage our government intentionally and then sell folks on the idea that government is dysfunctional.
Do you remember when the biggest scandal was our state officials taking weekend trips to Asheville on our tax dollars? I do. Now I just hope my home's drinking water stays potable in the face of completely unregulated frackapalooza.
Thanks, Lisa. By the way, I never said by voting against this tonight we will give the finger the General Assembly. Thay's not my style. I said "some would believe it is the equalivant of giving the finger to the GA, but they may respond with their fist..." EAB
Dontcha know that Snoopy's in Raleigh now has a bologna burger on the menu, and it's the Special this month.
Maybe the NCGA could improve efficiency by arresting all 2.1 million citizens who voted Democrat in 2012. http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/NC…
Looking forward to this one. Gonna be a fun show.
The City police get overtime, but the State Capitol police don't? Hmmm, that doesn't sound fair....oh wait, welcome to NC
In a move of extreme empathy for the rights of all citizens, South Carolina sent at least two buses of a labor union to assist North Carolina with our fight for human and constitutional rights for all citizens. Strange that Goolsby (Wilmington), Tillis, Berger, McCroy and others in the this immoral corrupt legislature can turn a deaf ear to its own citizens, while proud, and many elderly citizens from South Carolina, gave their day for this great injustice to North Carolina. Please let us make sure that this current "unmoved" legislative body (by their words and actions) NEVER have the pleasure of serving North Carolina again. Thank you, South Carolina, for bringing your support, hopes and dreams to assist us.
Here's a question worth investigating: Why is the City of Raleigh---supposedly progressive--helping the Rethuglicans in the General Assembly infringe on the First Amendment rights of the protesters by helping the Capital Police arrest demonstrators? WRAL says today the city has spent at least sixteen thousand dollars in police overtime to assist them. That's MY taxdollars as as Raleigh citizen being used to help the extremists in the state legislature. I'm not happy with that and neither should any other Raleigh taxpayer should be.
Tonight, the Senate rejected the House version of SB 334 and called for a Senate-House committee. The vote was 17-29. the Senate wanted the lease torn up immediately. The House said tear it up in a year. What would a compromise be? Tear up in six months? Tear it, but only part way? None of the red-hot Republicans wanted to say what should happen next.
The Durham Bike Co-op is mentioned twice: in the story itself and in the sidebar.
No mention of the Durham Bike Co-op? File under "Glaring Omissions"...
I have watched all three Paradise Lost. Those boys are clean and should NEVER HAD TO PLEAD GUILTY!! WHY IS TERRY HOBBS NOT ON TRIAL? His interview on the third looks like he is guilty. They even have DNA TO PROVE IT AND NEIGHBORS WHOM SAW HIM WITH THE YOUNG BOUS WHOM LOST THEIR LIVES!! That state is very judgmental when it comes to how a person looks, acts, music etc.... So should EVERYONE BE ON TRIAL FOR LISTENING TO METALLICA, WEARS BLACK AND LONG HAIR??? I wear black, love Metallica, and grew up with boys with long hair. We NEVER MURDERED ANYONE!!!! SHAME ON THAT STATE. THEIR NAMES SHOULD BE CLEARED. NOT HAVE TO PLEAD GUILTY FOR SOMETHING THEY DID NOT DO!!! WHERE IS THE REAL KILLER??? WHY WON'T THEY CHECK OUT TERRY HOBBS? OFFER HIM A LIE DETECTOR TEST. SEE WHAT HE SAYS THEN!!!! There was NO JUSTICE for the three Memphis boys. TERRIBLE. THEN TERRY HOBBS CAUGHT LIEING, BEAT HIS WIFE, WAS SEEN WITH HIS STEP SON, LOOKED EXTREMELY GUILTY DURING HIS INTERVIEW ON THE THIRD MOVIE. I FEEL FOR THOSE MEMPHIS THREE. SHAME ON YOUR SYSTEM FOR NOT FOLLOWING UP ON TERRY HOBBS!!!
Thank you. This was well done. Grateful
The Dix Park legislation -- the House version of SB 334 -- is on the Senate's agenda tonight. (Session is at 7.) The Senate can accept the House amendments, reject them (reject the amended bill) and let the bill die, or it can reject the bill and call for a Senate-House conference to work out a different arrangement.
The House version extends Raleigh's lease for a year before killing it. Whether the Senate goes along or not, the lease is now a dead letter as far as Raleigh's and the Dix Visionaries' ability to raise money for Dix Park.
Thus, we're back to the beginning with the state (Art Pope) negotiating with the city (Mayor McFarlane and a united City Council) over whether Dix should be a park, and if so, what kind of park? The latter question is why I think Raleigh should get busy with park planning, and air all of the ideas for the park that were heard in some detail five/six years ago but haven't really been explored since.
Off the top of my head, they include: arboretum, amusement park, amphitheater, X-treme sports, science museums, mental health exhibits, a hotel, restaurants, a Chautauqua institute, and one I just heard -- staff all of these things with folks who've been in programs for the developmentally handicapped or recovering from mental illness. Plus walking, bicycling and trolley car routes connecting to NCSU and downtown Raleigh.
Thrashing out these ideas would help focus Pope's attention on the fundamental problem that some things in a park don't go with other things in a park. For example, a state office complex in a park -- where quiet would be wanted -- is incompatible with the kind of park where people come and bring their noisy, active kids.
You could probably grow flowers around it, however.
I'm really surprised this conversation didn't mention what choices might have looked like if we had systemic supports in place, like good, accessible and affordable child care and better benefits for working parents. Those seem crucial to this discussion.
This is why a lot of mentally ill end up hurting or worst killing thereselves because of the lack of mental health agencies left. There needs to be a plan before they get to the point of hospitalization. Most cannot afford medication or need supervision. Remember there still human and need love also! I'm bipolar and a mother of two and I've been diagnosed since "06 and as long as i stay on my medication i can live a normal life.
Re: “Dissent in the ranks over N.C. Democratic Party Chairman Randy Voller”
The grassroots guy won.
Voller proposed investing and building party infrastructure in each county including GOTV operations, and there is no mark up for that work. Voller wants to invest in the County Parties.
Could that explain the whole attack thing?
