Re: “Do white men still matter?

Did the editors read this? Whoever this joker is, all he sees is color. This is, by far, the most racist and biggoted thing I've ever read is this mag. Oh yeah, forgot sexist as well..I thought the Indy was a voice of reason. Oh well...

Re: “New frames

Western Lanes... man! I spent a lot of a misguided youth in that place back in the 70s and 80s. Having to give the password to the guard to get into the cramped underground parking garage on league nights. And real wood lanes -- not that synthetic stuff they use now. Bowled my first 200-game there. Had my first legal beer there too, I believe. My first ball came from the pro shop there.

Thanks for the memories... glad to know the place has survived.

Re: “State's Rites

Actually, the blood of those kids is on the hands of a psychotic lunatic who took his mother's guns to the school to kill her with them. Maybe if it weren't quite so easy for the bad guys to get guns in the first place, we wouldn't need more guns to stop them.

Re: “Do white men still matter?

Because we voted for them is the answer. On the national election level, 3% is no mandate. A 1.6% swing will change that outcome and points will be gained when the taxes, promised not to be levied, are levied and reduce income. But then, I learned my math before coming to NC so it may not apply here.

Re: “Do white men still matter?

If Foxx is the best the GOP can put up against Hagan, I'll breathe a little easier. Foxx is even battier than Liddy Dole, and Hagan knocked her off as a challenger. Now that she's the incumbent, she'll have the campaigning advantages that come with that (not least of which is name recognition outside of one Congressional District).

Now if we can just get rid of Mini Mitch...

Wow, that was so beautifully written. You have such a way with words. Thanks for the food for thought. I have a good friend who is working on an interesting documentary on oysters and pearls. :) I think I'll be introspective with my pearls.

What a clear-eyed and lovely piece. Where many of us clank with cognitive dissonance, Eva sings cantatas. Thank you!

Re: “Gov.-elect Pat McCrory has someone to answer to: Art Pope

Many of us are hoping, indeed praying, that Art Pope -- with the blessing or at least the consent of Guv Pat-on-the-back McCrory -- will completely defund all the leftist garbage that as accumulated in the NC budget for decades. The list is long and putrid-- this man has some shoveling to do. Furthermore, if Pope has the sense we hope he has, he will purge the leftists from state government. The left, rather than funding itself through benefactors such as George Soros, has successfully lived mainly off government for years. While this will still happen elsewhere (DC, etc.) there is no reason to let it happen past about Jan. 15th, 2013 in NC. Send them home to celebrate MLK and don't let them come back.

All can be done in the name of cost reduction and spending the tax payers money wisely. Amazingly, this will be the truth, too! Yes, if you are a leftist, you are so screwed...I hope.

Re: “In giving up on key issues, we endanger our children's future

No, "we" did not fail these kids. You leftists who have for decades given us more and more gun control have failed them. Every single gun control law failed and failed dramatically in Newtown. And now you want more of the same failure? This is not stupid -- it is malicious, fraudulent and evil. It leaves the blood of Olivia and her friends on your hands forever with nothing positive to ever come out of this.

We can start by a repeal of all the gun laws. Since they have failed so comprehensively, let's start from scratch. Next, let's make sure these kids are defended from madmen everywhere they live their lives-- the schools, churches, day care centers, playgrounds, everywhere kids are. We need armed guards and responsible/trained adults who are carrying a concealed handgun and willing to use the force necessary to defend the children.

The left actually has an opportunity to do something positive for children. But do you have it in you to actually do what will work? I remain hopeful for common-sense child-defense laws but I'm not holding my breath-- I fear your prejudices are too deeply held and your emotions too powerful and disruptive to the intellect and judgement.

Re: “In giving up on key issues, we endanger our children's future

I have few words on this idiocy.
The gun in Newtown was stolen.
The cause of these shootings can be found in mental health records.
The reason for toy guns and tickets to violent movies is that people purchase them.
In other developed nations with gun control, the criminals still have guns & crime persists.
Cars cause more deaths than guns. Ergo, ban cars?
Christmas is still coming, as is the new year. Grieve the tragedy. Treat the cause.
Don't twist the cause to suit an agenda.

Re: “Expect state lawmakers to act quickly on Voter ID

Hopefully not so fast. If the Republicans are really serious about restoring integrity and perceived integrity to the voting process, they will study and then craft a bill that will address and halt all avenues of voter fraud. There are many. I expect Voter ID will be a part of it but why not make it comprehensive to stop it all and to verify-- before, during, and after election day that the vote was secure, accurate, honest, and never tampered with. Click like if you want honest voting.

Re: “Re: The Year in Music; Dix property; school-based health centers; Citizens United

My letter printed here shows the value of the Dix property as $870M. The correct value is $87.0M. I tried to correct this prior to publication but was unable to. Apologies.
