Bike lanes on Hillsborough Street: √

Will Alphin, who led the effort to have bike lanes striped on the new Hillsborough Street, took the photo you see at right and sent this note to his friends on Facebook (including moi):

"[T]wo years since we first started turning the wheels to get a bike lane on the street adjacent to the highest percentage of cyclists in raleigh - they are down. watching over a hunderd motoroists drive down hillsborough street on the inaugural night of the lanes, not a single one slipped over the line into the cylce lane. this is gonna work. thanks to cyclists that pushed for this and the city council and staff that supported it. more please!"

I think he's right. Cyclists will have to be careful and ride close to the line to avoid being "doored," but they know that. And Clark Avenue is an option if all you're trying to do is go east-to-west.

Which just goes to show the truth of my email sig, "Progress Still Possible."

[Note that it isn't "Progress Is Easy."]

It's too bad they couldn't have moved the street parking to the left to create a barrier between the car traffic and cyclists. That way there's a significantly less chance of dooring or collisions.

Will -- Thank you for sharing this list. All deserve credit. Glad to second your mention of John Odom, someone I've always respected. I'd forgotten this is supposed to be a trial run. Bikes belong on Hillsborough Street and the lines and sharrows should help make it happen.

bob - thanks for the post and your support for the lanes as we worked it through the process. there were many others that made this happen including: victor lytvinenko - dylan bounfrisco - alan wiggs - dale tiska - dawn leonard - bike first raleigh crew - BPAC including steven waters - julie woosley - brian mccrodden and on the city side of things eric lamb - the public works committee approved it TWICE - russ stephenson, bonner gaylord and john odom, and though i suspect there is rarely a positive mention of john odom's name in the pages of the INDY, he had the brilliant idea to tag the surplus dollars of the hillsborough st. renovation to this specific project if approved - in a time when the city was not funding the many other bike improvement projects. the reason it had to go through twice was the opposition of the hillsborough street business owners. anyone that appreciates the lanes PLEASE take a minute to mention it to the staff and proprieters of the hillsborough st. businesses AND COR council members and eric lamb COR transportation manager. these lanes were put down on a TRIAL BASIS by NC DOT and after sometime, they will assess the success. will alphin

This is great — I noticed these this morning while riding down hillsborough st. The parking spaces have been narrowed, but the solid line for auto traffic makes riding in between feel a whole lot safer. I wouldn't consider Clark Ave. an alternate, though, as it seems much more narrow with parked cars and average speed is probably slightly higher.
