...and tonight, from North Carolina...

Posted by Byron Woods on Sat, Jun 30, 2007 at 12:10 PM

The second of ADF's Acts to Follow showcases devoted to North Carolina choreographers convenes in Baldwin Auditorium at 8 p.m. Highlights:

  • former Trisha Brown dancer Niki Juralewicz's Elemental, described as a "tender, vicious, and playful" series of solos, trios, and duets,
  • Ashlee Ramsey and Katheryn Ullom's No, I Agree, a study in mixed messages we enjoyed at Bickett Gallery earlier this year,
  • former Alvin Ailey dancer Duane Cyrus' delicious Fruit Flows From Root, and
  • an excerpt from former Laura Dean dancer Rodger Belman's theatrical Fate.

Admission's free -- but after we roasted in the auditorium during the International Choreographers in Residence concert this week, our recommendations: dress light, and bring fans.

Before that, Cadence Dubus' Tender Age, a restaging of the half-hour work she presented at Dance New Amstersdam earlier this year with costumes by Nathan Keay. The show's had a last-minute change of venue. Look for it in the first floor studio beneath the Ark tonight at 7 p.m.

There is a saying it ain't over till the fat lady sings. At Acts to Follow Saturday night it didn't begin until the fat lady was done dancing. "Acts" started with an obese woman in high heels doing a tango. There were a lot of Tangophiles in the audience cheering her on but this was really out of place at ADF. Perhaps she got lost on the way to Dancing with The Stars playing in the RBC Arena. The highlight of the evening was "Fate" by Rodger Belman. He and his partner in black performed some exquisite and intricate choreography. The two dancers were perfectly matched in body type, costume and dancing ability. They effortlessly performed lifts and synchronous moves together in a nice storyline. It was too short. The comical award for the evening has to go to Katherine Kiefer Stark for her fun and delightful “The Pudding was Served Clumsily, Again”. Dancers in white pants and white tee shirts performed quirky moves, sometimes playing with tucking the shirt in or pulling it out. One shirt had a hood which the dancer occasionally held in her mouth. The number ended with all dancers stripping the costumes off and dancing in colorful underwear in pastel shades, a nice contrast to the all white dance costume. It put a smile on the collective audience faces. Great fun!!!
