Destination on right

What does it take to be named to the 27-member UNC Advisory Committee on Strategic Directions? Political clout: That explains Republicans Phil Berger and Thom Tillis, among the most powerful people in the Legislature. Business and financial connections: That explains Lew Ebert, president of the N.C. Chamber of Commerce and Robert Ingram, retired executive at GlaxoSmithKline. Big donors: That explains Fred Eshelman, who gave $35 million to the UNC pharmacy school that bears his name. But there are reasons to be worried about the composition of the committee, whose membership UNC President Tom Ross announced last week. The committee charged...

What's up with the photo of Michael in the Iowa caucus story?

Posted By on Thu, Jan 5, 2012 at 1:12 PM

Last night I received an email from a reader upset because in the Indy's print edition this week, our cover story about the Iowa caucuses included a picture of Michael, a 28-year-old textile worker, in a string of photos of GOP candidates. Early voting turnout for this year's Durham general election was double that of the October primary (5,039 to 2,298) but still pitiful considering there are 133,452 registered voters in Durham County. The percentages were similarly low in Wake County, even though the turnout is twice that of 2009—and this is an election with municipal races in 11 towns and cities, plus the District 3 school board runoff. Will Orange County redeem democracy in...

The inaugural edition of the Indy editor's blog

Posted By on Fri, Nov 4, 2011 at 11:09 AM

It's 6:30 a.m. and I feel like it's the first day of school. Lunch packed. Teeth brushed. Hair more or less combed, like that would do any good. But I'm into it now and I imagine it to accurately reflect my personality: informal, conversational, irreverent and occasionally vulgar. You've been warned. In FWIW, my goal is to demystify the Indy by explaining how the editorial department chooses...
